Sometimes the best ideas don’t happen over screens or emails; they happen between colorful canopies, half-empty candy bowls, and laughter around a shared table.

Falling Leaves, Raising the Bar
Crisp autumn air, vibrant foliage, and picturesque New England towns beckoned us to the northeastern U.S. this past week for a much anticipated in-person client workshop. As an avid autumnophile, I was thrilled with the sights of pristine white buildings nestled among riotous red, orange, and gold leaves that would make the Lorax proud.
With our heads full of “thinks”, we jumped into a packed agenda of collaboration and discovery. In our remote-forward work, it’s a special treat to be in the same room, watching ideas spark across a face and feeling the live energy that no virtual call can replicate. Getting the right people and the right mindset around the table helped us cover a whole lot of ground, from a review of the last year’s progress, strategy and roadmap discussions, deep-dive tabletop exercises, and tactical best practice roundtables.
These face-to-face moments remind us that innovation and engagement isn’t just about new tools or features—it’s about people bringing their best ideas forward, challenging assumptions, and shaping better ways to work together. That’s why these annual visits are built into our higher-tier service offerings—to make it easier on facilitators by eliminating third party travel expense approvals amid the regular challenges of competitive room reservations and calendar jiu-jitsu. A thoughtful in-person workshop can be the launch point for new energy in GRC programming while providing both them and us the chance to focus on improvement, planning, and strategy.
Off-screen brainstorming, experience sharing, and discussions of complex topics can help us make decisions faster and synchronize in the same direction. Whether we were discussing nuances of managing NERC Compliance through GRC platform technology or analyzing permissions of super users across the various processes or implementing best practices across use cases for a smoother end user experience, our team had the pleasure of drawing from and adding to our wells of expertise.
Sushi, Seuss, and Small-town Magic
One of the best travel perks is venturing to local favorite restaurants, which is how we ended up in Easthampton, MA. The quaint downtown delivered quiet ambiance and some red fish, blue fish in incredible sushi, curry, and poke. To our delight, we learned Easthampton and the neighboring Mount Tom are rumored to be the inspiration for Dr. Seuss’s Whoville and Mr. Grinch’s Mt. Crumpet. But, Whoville wasn’t celebrating Christmas just yet. As we were pushing our plates away, we noticed a parade of adorable trick or treaters of all ages, from New England lobsters to Mad Hatters and Tic Tac boxes flooding the downtown streets. Our crew got caught up in the fun, lingering over conversation until the streets reopened. Those memories just aren’t made over Teams.
With the year winding down toward American Thanksgiving (and Canadian Thanksgiving in the recent past), it’s easy to find reasons to be grateful in this chapter for Karta. We work with incredible clients who are collaborative and not competitive. We get to do some of the most fun and rewarding work of our careers, stretching our minds to new possibilities and letting go of the status quo. We can’t wait to see the places our clients will go, and we’re honored to be their Cat in the Hat along the way, stirring up fresh ideas, a little healthy disruption, and helping them uncover new capabilities year after year.
